Top tips for road safety

Whether you are a newly qualified driver, or you have been driving for many decades, it is always worth reviewing your road safety knowledge.

The laws change, vehicles change, and given the devastating consequences of a lapse in judgement or care and attention, it is always worth reevaluating your knowledge.

To help you out, we have compiled a list of some of our top road safety tips.

Change your driving style to suit the roads

Driving on country roads is very different to driving on a motorway or dual carriageway, even if the speed limits are only 10 mph apart.

When driving on country lanes, make sure to slow right down for each and every blind corner, anticipating anything that could be coming your way.

Remember there are all sorts of different potential hazards in these areas that you might not be used to, from horses and livestock to quad bikes and tractors.

Avoid driving if tired

You have seen the signs on the motorway warning you not to drive if you are fatigued and to have a break before continuing. These are there for a reason. Far too many accidents come from people ignoring this advice.

If you do indeed find yourself becoming sleepy, pull into the side of the road, have one or two cups of coffee if possible and wait around 15 minutes for the effects to kick in.

If you are planning a long trip cross country, take a break of at least 15 minutes every two or three hours.

Never use your mobile phone

Using your mobile phone whilst driving is incredibly dangerous, selfish and potentially fatal. So many accidents happen because drivers are distracted by their phones.

Put your device away completely when driving in the glove box to avoid being tempted. It is illegal to use your phone in your hand whilst driving and whilst handsfree options are not technically against the law, they are not really a good idea so avoid these as well if you can.

Rely upon a mobile tyre fitter for roadside tyre repair

If you get a puncture at the side of a busy road, replacing it yourself can be dangerous and is generally not recommended.

Instead roadside tyre fitting should be conducted by an expert tyre fitter from a local mobile tyre fitting company. These experts will not only travel directly to your location, saving you time and money, but they have also undergone extensive training to ensure that they can safely perform the task.

REACT trained fitters will have your punctured tyre fixed or replaced and ready to go again in no time.

Don’t drink and drive

It is simply not worth it, even if you have only had one. If you are lucky enough not to hurt yourself or others when driving under the influence you are still risking your job, your licence, and your clean police record.

Call a cab or get a lift if you have been drinking and need to get home.
